What is the difference between a Tutor and a Teacher?

Teachers use a style of learning for the majority of the class, they have the difficult job of delivering a whole curriculum within a school year. The teacher aims to make the content as interesting as possible and enable as many of their students (often 30+) to grasp as much of the material as possible. However, even with the most skilled teachers, the pressure of having to deliver material within a timeframe means that the delivery must be given in a way that captures the most, this often means the average ability. Not all children can learn in the same way. Therefore, a barrier to education can be created. Children can hide in the background if they are struggling, or children can act like the class clown or misbehave as a way of hiding their school-related difficulties. It is, therefore, a tutor’s role to remove the barriers to learning and alter the pace of the learning to the student’s understanding. Tutors facilitate student learning in a relatively personalised approach to build on what’s taught in the classroom in line with the national curriculum. Tutors tend to meet the emotional world of the child as they are unable to distract themselves from things they don’t understand.  However, At TutorBEE we pride ourselves on our understanding, chilled and friendly approach which reduces the anxiety that may come with 1-1 learning.

‘’Lexey has built so much confidence and her self-esteem is building week by week. Lexey was so nervous but now she says Vashni is like one of her friends! My daughter’s experience is amazing and as long as Lexey is happy I am happy’’

 – Tina Golding

The main differences

  • The number of students taught in a session – tutors work one-to-one or with small groups for tutoring sessions

  • Qualifications – tutors are not required to have formal teaching qualifications, however, lots of tutors have qualifications in the subjects they assist students with.

  • Individual learning – tutors are focused on individual goals rather than the needs of an entire class.

  • Flexibility – tutors are able to offer more flexible learning hours and materials

  • Feedback and attention – tutors are more able to provide detailed, immediate feedback and give more attention to individual students

It takes a village! both teachers and tutors play important roles in children’s learning and the best results often come when they work together.
