Year 6 SATs Preparations

Year 6 is an important year at school as not only are children preparing to go to secondary school, but they also sit their SATs exams. The results of the SATs exams are often then used to indicate which level and class your child should be in for year 7.

TutorBEE will be holding a SATs Overview Course in February half term (focusing on paper 1) and Easter half term (focusing on papers 2 and 3). The sessions will be 2 hours long and will support small groups of up to 10 students per session. The aim of the course is to support the preparation and more importantly, build confidence and understanding of the topics that will be tested in the Maths SAT’s Test.

Students will be provided with a workbook as we work through key topics during the session. They will also take away a practice paper to complete at home and parents will be given the answers. This will allow children to become familiar with the layout of the exam and the type of questions they may be asked.

There are three test papers in total, consisting of:

·         Paper 1 – arithmetic (30 minutes)

This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In this paper, children will also be required to use percentages, fractions, and decimals.

·         Paper 2 – reasoning (40 minutes)

·         Paper 3 – reasoning (40 minutes)

Both reasoning papers consist of around 20 problem-solving questions, in which children must show solid mathematical knowledge by solving various problems and puzzles.

Previous SATs results at the Year 6 level show that children tend to struggle with multi-step questions, particularly fractions, when they are combined with addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication. These types of questions will be covered in both sessions.

SATs Tip for Parents/Carers:

When you are a 10 or 11-year-old, SATs can seem like a much bigger deal than they should do.

At that age you see these tests as something that you have been working towards for a long period of time, and whilst they are important, SATs are not the be-all and end-all.

As a parent it is important for you to tell your child that whilst they should always try their hardest, you’ll still be proud of them whatever happens in the tests.

The aim of our SATs Overview Course is to build children’s confidence in key topics so they feel better prepared and less worried about their SATs tests
